What is the healthy, safe and eco-friendly way to hydrate?

Maintaining adequate hydration is one of the cornerstones of good health and it’s an achievable way to start looking after yourself a little better, especially during the hot summer months when dehydration is more likely. Your choice of water probably affects how likely you are to drink enough of it, for reasons of taste, convenience and your perceptions of how healthy and eco-friendly it is.

But first, how do I know if I’m drinking enough water? Headaches, tiredness, difficulty concentrating, feeling lightheaded, having dark urine or peeing less than usual are common signs that you may be dehydrated.

Is tap water a good option? Many people find tap water unpalatable (most of us will be familiar with the unpleasant taste of chlorine) and consequently don’t drink enough to maintain healthy levels of hydration. Unfortunately we know that tap water also contains a myriad of contaminants and impurities which raise health questions: who wants to be drinking plastic fibres, pesticides, fertilisers, hormones and heavy metals? That’s hardly an encouragement to drink tap water.

What about bottled water? Historically, people have opted for bottled water because they feel it tastes better than tap water or because they believe it is the healthier choice, but we now know that bottled water is contaminated with microplastics, just like tap water. And of course who isn’t now acutely aware of the damage done to our oceans and waterways by single-use plastics such as bottled water?

So what’s the healthy, safe and eco-friendly way to hydrate? And what else can you do to stay well during hot weather?

Here are our three top tips:

1. Choose pure water. This is tap water purified of all the contaminants and impurities that mar taste and compromise your health. If you install a Pure H2O Co. reverse osmosis water purifier at home you’ll be able to enjoy unlimited quantities of pure water delivered from a convenient under-sink system. With worrying contaminants and impurities removed, you can be sure that your water not only tastes good, but is guaranteed safe for you. It’s also much more environmentally friendly, compared to plastic bottled water.

When you’re out and about, simply fill up a re-usable bottle from your Pure H2O pure water tap. There are many eco-friendly options on the market so #There’sNoExcuseForSingleUse! You can even refill your travel bottle with Pure H2O at Planet Organic stores, Hello Love and if you happen to be travelling through Paris, the Eurostar Business Lounge.

Don’t forget to encourage children and the elderly to drink more water during hot weather as they’re especially vulnerable to dehydration.

2. Snack on water-rich foods. The water in plant-based foods counts towards your daily water intake so carry around a little container of fruit, salad or vegetables. Cucumber sticks are particularly refreshing on a hot summers day.

3. Make simple lifestyle changes: wear natural fibre clothing (organic cotton, linen) and choose light colours. Don’t forget to wear a hat, seek shade and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, 11 am to 3 pm.

We hope these tips help you enjoy the summer and make hydrating at home or on the go just a little bit easier, more enjoyable and healthier for you and the planet.

And if you prefer drinking sparkling water, we have the perfect solution – either our original multifunction touchscreen kitchen tap the Quatreau Touch or our new compact drinks station the Quatreau SmartTap. Both deliver sparkling and chilled water, either filtered or pure, and can be installed at home, in the workplace or hospitality venue.

Pure Genius: the world’s most advanced water purifiers for the home are made in Woking.

We were delighted to read this article about the environmental and health benefits of drinking The Pure H2O Company’s reverse osmosis purified water in Essential Surrey & SW London this week. Our thanks to Catherine Whyte, who writes:

“The world’s most advanced water purifiers for the home are made in Woking. Time to bin the bottle.”

Catherine identifies the health benefits of drinking reverse osmosis purified water:

“pure water could well become the new frontier in our odyssey towards optimum health.”

And we were thrilled to read that she also flags up the environmental benefits:

“Moreover, the systems are truly green: food miles are reduced to zero and, with no need to buy bottled water, there’s no plastic or glass waste generated at all.”

We’re a truly local company based in Woking, so we’re very happy that Surrey writers are on board with the advantages of buying a locally-manufactured, yet world-class product that benefits your daily home life, reduces your environmental impact and helps maximise your health by removing the contaminants and impurities commonly found in tap water.

Bottled Water Contaminated By Plastics

BOTTLED WATER CONTAMINATED BY PLASTICS

If the environmental impact of single-use plastic pollution wasn’t enough to convince you that bottled water is a poor choice of drinking water, the latest news that plastic fibres contaminate over 90% of bottled water brands might be the final piece of information you need.

Analysis of 259 bottles from 19 locations in nine countries across 11 different brands found an average of 325 plastic particles for every litre of water being sold. (1)

The World Health Organisation is so concerned that it has launched a review into the effects of plastic ingestion on human health. Bruce Gordon, from the WHO, told the BBC:

“When we think about the composition of the plastic, whether there might be toxins in it, to what extent they might carry harmful constituents, what actually the particles might do in the body – there’s just not the research there to tell us”. (2)

What we do already know – from research on wild animals – is that microplastics attract bacteria and absorb toxic chemicals, which are released into the body.

Clearly, it’s time to stop buying plastic bottled water.

Tap water contaminated, too.

You might think that tap water is the safer and more environmentally friendly option. Sadly, that’s not the case; back in September we learned that plastic contamination is widespread in UK tap water, too (read that blog post here):

Whilst the UK has amongst the lowest levels of plastic contamination, 72% of samples of UK tap water have been found to contain plastic fibres. (3)

Furthermore, tap water contains a whole host of other contaminants and impurities. Regular readers of our blog will know that tap water carries neurotoxic micro-organisms called cyanobacteria and the metal copper, both of which are associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Tap water is also known to be contaminated by pesticides, hormone and medication traces and heavy metals. You don’t have to ingest these contaminants – you can enjoy pure water.

Reverse Osmosis Water Purifiers Remove Microplastics

Jug filters are not capable of removing plastics or microplastics. Reverse osmosis is the only suitable treatment method for removing plastics from your drinking water; it’s the foundation of our technologically advanced tap water purifiers.

Either of our 3 models remove microplastics and other man-made as well as naturally occurring impurities. They’re convenient and compact, fitting under a kitchen sink. They’re environmentally-friendly, too; reducing food miles, carbon footprint and single-use plastic pollution compared to bottled water. They’re also budget-friendly, starting at only £29 per month with our rental option (you can also buy outright).

Pure H2O Co. Purifiers Guarantee Water Purity

Our purifiers are installed up by our specially trained team of engineers who service your system once a year to make sure it continues to deliver the purest, safest water possible, day in, day out, in unlimited quantities.

The Pure H2O Company enters the Marine market with the Quatreau SmartTap.

We’re delighted to announce that as well as supplying domestic and commercial settings with our multifunction taps and water purifiers, we now serve the marine market.

Maintaining ample quantities of drinking water of sufficient quality poses several problems to the boat owner, most significantly finding storage space for plastic bottled mineral water, or risking the effects of stomach-churning impurities present in a fresh water tank.

The Quatreau SmartTap solves both problems and delivers additional benefits. The compact drinks station dispenses chilled, sparkling, boiling and / or ambient water at the touch of a button, which means no trips to the supermarket for mineral water, no lost storage space for all those plastic bottles, and no kettle required on board for hot drinks.

Smart-Tap_Blog

MotorBoat & Yachting* features the Quatreau SmartTap in their November issue, commenting:

“Really convenient and will put a stop to the familiar bottled water avalanche every time you open the fridge after a rough trip”

Recently featured in Boating Business*, innovator and company M.D. Roger Wiltshire advises that the Quatreau SmartTap is suitable for retrofit or new builds and is available in a range of finishes including brushed or polished solid 316 stainless steel, with left and right hand options.

The recently refitted Mia Elise II*, a 197 ft custom motor yacht with impressive leisure and entertainment facilities currently available for charter, benefits from the Quatreau SmartTap. Accommodating 12 guests and 15 crew, the yacht’s water requirements are assured thanks to the high volumes delivered by our Quatreau SmartTap, with purity guaranteed by the addition of our RODI water purifier.

The Quatreau SmartTap was also specified on performance cruiser Elfje. As Yachting World* reports, energy efficiency and sustainability were top of owner Wendy Schmidt’s priorities for her custom built 172ft ketch. Quatreau SmartTap ensures the lowest possible energy consumption and highest performing thermal insulation, its solid 316 stainless steel build ensuring strength and longevity with low environmental impact.

The SmartTap’s standard in-line filtration removes impurities from the vessel’s water tank, but for extra peace of mind specifiers and vessel owners will undoubtedly opt for the optional under-counter water purifier which delivers up to 99.99% pure water, guaranteed free from micro-organisms and every other health-compromising contaminant or impurity. This purifier is the only system on the market to carry EPA certification for the removal of micro-organisms, and the Quatreau SmartTap is the only one of its kind manufactured in the UK, which guarantees excellent build quality compared to imported systems.

Eve Kalinik: Understanding Hydration with Pure H2O Co. Ltd

Here’s guest blogger, Eve Kalinik, on the importance of adequate hydration with pure water

Hydration, or the lack thereof, is something that I’m consistently reinforcing with my clients, many of us wonder why we have afternoon slumps, food cravings, headaches and sluggish digestions but often this can be a simple fact of not taking in enough water. When you think as we are almost 60% water and pretty much every cellular process is conducted in a water environment its no wonder we need to make sure that our bodies are well hydrated. This also contributes to supporting digestive processes & juices as well as transporting oxygen and vital nutrients in the blood and around the body. And a hydrated body also burns fat more efficiently. Fact.

As a general guide we need to take in around 2 litres per day but this should be increased if you are exercising or traveling. Whilst pure water is the obvious and most bio available source, hydration isn’t just about straight up h20. It is also important to eat plenty of water rich food based sources too. Cucumber, green leafy veg and strawberries are up there at around 90% water but generally most vegetables will contain good levels. Try not to get so fixated on having a certain amount of fluid per day but also ensure to have hydrating foods as part of your daily intake. Juices & smoothies are a great way to max this but making sure you are hitting your 8 portions of veggies per day will have an impact on your hydration levels too. When drinking water the key thing is to make sure that your water comes from a clean source, trying to avoid plastic bottles where possible as these contain hormone mimicking substances and other chemicals that can leach into the water itself. Repeated and long term exposure to these are not beneficial for our health so try to buy your water in glass bottles where you can. Investing in a home filtration unit is well worth the money, rather than wasting it on filter jugs that don’t get rid of a lot of the contaminants and general nasties. In my opinion the best filtration system uses a reverse osmosis process, like the pureh2o.co.uk systems, that also takes out hormones, since most regular filters won’t do this.

Here’s some more of my better hydrating tips…

WAKE & HYDRATE – start the day as soon as you wake up with a glass of water. The body will be pretty thirsty first thing so try to get into a routine with this. Warm water and lemon juice can be a nice twist and also stimulates digestive processes.

MAKE IT INTERESTING – add things like slices of lemon, mandolin sliced cucumber, fresh mint or fresh lime & pinch cayenne can make all the difference and certainly make your water look and taste more inspiring. Avoid the flavoured waters as these often contain high levels of sugar.

SIP THROUGHOUT THE DAY – don’t get to the end of the day and realise that you haven’t had enough and chug back in one go. We can over hydrate ourselves too so little and often is the key mantra here.

WINE NOT WATER – when it comes to meal times that is! Avoid drinking a lot of water when you are eating as this can dilute gastric juice secretion and impair breaking down food. A small glass of wine can assist this though.

HAVE A GOAL – buy a beautiful jug and have it on your desk at work or in the kitchen. That way you’ll be more inclined to drink regularly. A plastic bottle with its label peeling off isn’t the most appealing things and clients often tell me they don’t have time to go to the water machine so having this to hand will make it a lot easier. Check out BKR bottles that are chic and make you want to drink more.

HERBAL TEAS COUNT – in all their variety are another great and delicious way of increasing your intake. Coffee has a dehydrating effect so just stick to one organic freshly ground cup in the morning after breakfast.
