Press Release: Cyanobacteria On The Increase?

DRINKING WATER POISONED BY TOXIC ALGAE?

Levels of cyanobacteria – or ‘blue-green algae’ as its commonly known – are massively on the increase in our lakes, a frightening finding as UK water treatment plants – those that deliver your tap water – do not routinely test for it even though it’s a neurotoxin linked to the development of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Cyanobacteria is toxic. Acute exposure causes skin irritation, gastroenteritis and respiratory symptoms; chronic exposure in low-doses over a number of years can result in liver tumours, hormone disruption and neurodegenetive disease.

A 58% rise has been seen over the past 200 years in lakes across the UK including the Lake District, the West Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland due to rises in industrial pollution. (Ecology Letters.)

Cyanobacteria accumulations can be seen on waterways as a blue-green bloom. It’s deadly to animals so keep your pets away from it. It can’t be seen or tasted in tap water, so there’s no way of knowing if you are drinking it or not. The old adage rings true: better safe than sorry.

The slug pesticide metaldehyde has also been found in tap water at levels breaching UK standards, and water treatment plants cannot remove it.

So is it time to look into alternatives to tap water to hydrate safely for your health, fitness and wellbeing?

There are many bottled water brands on the market, but studies show the RODI (Reverse Osmosis with De-Ionisation) purification process produces the purest water possible. It’s also environmentally responsible, achieving a 95%+ lower carbon footprint compared to drinking bottled water.

A RODI purifier typically fits under the kitchen sink. It automatically ‘cleans’ tap water, resulting in 99.99% pure water across the spectrum of man-made and unavoidable impurities. The pure water is delivered through an unobtrusive small tap fitted in your existing kitchen sink (although the Quatreau tap system which delivers RODI pure water as boiling, chilled, sparkling and hot/cold from a single, touch-screen tap, is also available). Both the RODI purifier and the taps can be retrofitted.

Health Bulletin: Toxic Algae Poisons Drinking Water?

We recently heard that levels of cyanobacteria (‘blue-green algae’) are massively on the increase in our lakes, a frightening finding as UK water treatment plants – those that deliver your tap water – do not routinely test for it even though it’s a neurotoxin linked to the development of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, leading to fears it is present in UK homes.

Fortunately, our RODI (Reverse Osmosis with De-Ionisation) purifiers remove cyanobacteria. In fact RODI achieves 99.99% water purity across the spectrum of both naturally-occurring and man-made impurities including disease-causing micro-organisms, pathogens and viruses and chemicals, heavy metals, hormones and medications.

Cyanobacteria is toxic. Acute exposure causes skin irritation, gastroenteritis and respiratory symptoms; chronic exposure in low-doses over a number of years can result in liver tumours, hormone disruption and neurodegenetive disease.

A 58% rise has been seen over the past 200 years in lakes across the UK including the Lake District, the West Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland due to rises in industrial pollution (Ecology Letters, February 2015).

If you want to maximise your health and quality of life now and for the future, if you want to be absolutely certain that you are drinking safe water, whatever frightening stories appear on the news, a RODI purifier is the answer. The only answer, in fact.

Health Bulletin: Pesticide in Drinking Water Breaches UK & EU Standards

As most of the UK saw wet weather in October the slug and snail population is set to increase, which is bad news for farmers who turn to the pesticide metaldehyde to control numbers and prevent crop damage.

Unfortunately rain increases run-off from land in to drains and watercourses, and during the past two years increasing levels of metaldehyde have been found in rivers and reservoirs, used to supply drinking water.

The problem is that water treatment plants aren’t capable of completely removing metaldehyde, meaning it is now found in tap water in the home. And what’s even worse is that in some places, concentrations of this pesticide in your drinking water are breaching UK and European standards.

As variations in weather patterns are set to continue, with milder, wet weather a particular feature and concern, levels of metaldehyde in drinking water are likely to continue to rise.

We believe that one of the best ways to look after your health and wellbeing is to drink pure water, NOT tap water or even bottled water. The best way to ensure the purity of your drinking water is to install a Reverse Osmosis De-Ionisation filter (RODI for short).

RODI purifiers remove 99.99% of the myriad of chemical impurities found in UK tap water, including the pesticide metaldehyde, along with other petrochemicals, carcinogens, asbestos, hormones and medications.

Our RODI purifiers typically install under your kitchen sink, connect to your drinking water supply and through a small separate tap, provide pure, clean water right at the heart of your home.

We’re passionate about water purity and would love to answer any questions you may have – call us now on 01483 617 000.

5 Tap Water Facts for Hallowe’en

As Hallowe’en approaches we’re thinking of ghosts and ghouls and things that go bump in the night. But the following 5 Tap Water Facts are not scare stories, they’re all too real. The good news is that pure water from one of our RODI filters installed under your kitchen sink turns tap water into 99.99% pure water, protecting you and your family’s health and peace of mind.

1. Medications In Drinking Water
Potentially toxic residues of Prozac, the commonly prescribed antidepressant fluoxetine, are building up in rivers and groundwater. Hormones from people taking the pill or HRT, along with animal hormones washed downstream with manure that can pass through sewage treatment plants untouched, are also making their way into the water system.

2. Chlorine
We’re all familiar with the unpleasant odour and taste of chlorine in tap water. Chlorine is used to kill off dangerous pathogens, but officials are concerned that the by-products of chlorination are a threat to health due to their toxic nature. Even though research suggests a link between chlorine and serious disease, chlorination is currently the most economically acceptable chemical for bacterial control and so is unlikely to be replaced any time soon.

3. There’s Fibre in your Drinking Water – but it’s Asbestos!
Fibre is crucial to digestive health, but this is one fibre you don’t want to ingest! Most water contains asbestos, whether it’s distributed by asbestos cement pipes or not. Whilst the important research needed to determine the implications of asbestos in drinking water is not yet complete, research in the USA shows that drinking tap water with certain levels of asbestos can lead to an increased risk of intestinal polyps, and indeed those levels have been found. Who would want to ingest asbestos?

4. Fluoride & Aluminium: the Chemical Cocktail that Hurts
Fluoride is added to tap water in some areas of the UK to protect against tooth decay, but on-going research shows that fluorine may build-up in the body and harm the immune system, affect the thyroid and contribute to brittle bones later in life. What makes it worse is that aluminium is also added to clarify tap water, but it’s a neurotoxin and scientists are concerned about its toxic interaction with fluoride.

5. Carcinogens from the Petrochemical Industry
MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) is commonly added to petrol to control CO2 emissions and improve combustion – sounds good, right? Unfortunately the US Environmental Protection Agency has labelled it a potential carcinogen and studies show that in recent years UK aquifers that serve households with drinking water have been contaminated by MTBE.

With all this in mind, you’ll be relieved to know that we guarantee our RODI filters remove 99.99% of these impurities. Call us now to discuss how we can help protect you and your family’s health, wellbeing and peace of mind: 01483 617 000 or email roger@pureh2o.co.uk
